Not a Lost Cause

Well, it is mid-February, and I still have 15 graduate programs to hear from, officially. Until today, all I had was one official rejection (Minnesota), two likely rejections (Wyoming and Alabama), and a waitlist (Kansas).

Then, this afternoon while I was at the liquor store buying beer for our Books & Beer podcast, my phone rang. From the voicemail, I learned that I have been accepted to West Virginia University's MFA program. They also offered me a TAship for three years that comes with a full tuition/fee waiver, health benefits, a stipend that rivals my previous job's salary, and a small scholarship on top of that.

To say that I am thrilled is an understatement. All the hard work I did this year finally came to something. No matter what happens with the many other programs I'm waiting to hear from, I will be able to do what I've been dreaming of for four years now - study creative writing full-time, at a fully-funded program. And WVU is of particular interest to me because it is the only MFA program in Appalachia, the place where a lot of my writing tends to wander. There are very few programs on my list for whom I would turn this offer down.

I couldn't count the number of times in the past few months that I've convinced myself I was an idiot for making virtually every decision I've made since quitting my job. Tonight, I savor happiness, relief, and the very real sense that my career as a writer has finally begun.
