The classical music world is a weird little subculture. From the time I was twelve and spent my first summer at a classical music camp, I have been a part of it. You join it slowly; you learn the jokes. It takes time to appreciate something like PDQ Bach or Mahler flowcharts.

I saw this AWP Bingo card online today and it made me realizing that I am slowly joining a second subculture - that of writers. Evidently it is just as weird and obscure as the one I'm already familiar with. It strikes me that this is, in its own way, a good step. Understanding the music world is one way of feeling that I belong there. Going from "I like to write" to "I am a writer" - it takes time. Being in on the jokes, as inane as it may seem, is actually a kind of validation.

I'm going to my first AWP conference ever this week; as luck would have it, it's in Chicago, so I don't have to travel for it. I'm looking forward to seeing some interesting panels, hearing Margaret Atwood speak, meeting a lot of people I've been getting to know over the internet, and feeling like an official member of the Weird Writers' Club instead of a bystander.
